    AMD Catalyst 11.5 supports all HD 6000 cards now

    AMD's driver department seems to long for a prolonged vacation this year, so they bolted down the new Catalyst Driver Suite 11.5 WHQL in record time in the first third of the month already and uploaded them on their servers. The announcement on their download site should be live any minute now. According to packaging and Catalyst Control Center timestamp, this WHQL-Driver for all HD-Radeons (yay! finally) capable of DirectX 10, 10.1 or 11, was finalized only two weeks after the official Mjölnir-Release. Unfortunately, this release can not compete in astonishing number in terms of performance increases with Mjölnir also, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. AMD's software engineers seem to have concentrated on fixing bugs and adding a new and improved control panel for the video section - I have a side-by-side comparison below (it's almost like I've had a hunch…). ...

    AMD Catalyst 11.4 WHQL Version Numbering

    With the release of Catalyst driver suite version 11.4 WHQL, AMD has finally gone public with the AMD Catalyst Preview Driver that you have been waiting for! and the driver so impressive it earned its own codename: Mjölnir I. The driver was initially advertised as providing (up to) 70% performance improvement in turn-based DirectX 11 strategy game Civilization V and (again, up to) 49% more Fps in the hugely successful console port Call of Duty: Black Ops which uses DirectX 9; and quite a few other games were also mentioned to profit from the new driver with double-digit percent increases - all of them popular benchmark titles to boot. When the word first hit the street, some reporting websites that got the information early conveniently forgot to mention, that these increases were achieved on a Radeon HD 6870 against the rather oldish Catalyst 10.9; a driver that did not even officially support the card that was launched in October 2010.

    A little later than usual - both from my side and from AMD's - but still well within time, the Catalyst driver suite for AMDs Radeon line of graphics accelerators has been updated to version 11.3 WHQL. The OpenCL driver portion has been promoted to being an integral part of the standard driver package, thus being included in the standard download. AMD touts this as seamless GPU-Compute in their Release Notes for this catalyst driver (which I've also attached as archive in case their website structure is changed and breaks the link). If you really don't want it, you can deselect it in the custom installation procedure.     AMDs Catalyst software and driver suite has just been released in it's first 2011 incarnation called Catalyst 11.1. While there has been a hotfix driver available for some days (and still is), which brings new controls for tessellation levels and also revamps the texture filtering slider, which I have talked about already, these things are planned for official introduction in Catalyst 11.2 due sometime in february. The official WHQL'ed Catalyst 11.1 however does not incorporate these two things, but packs the new Catalyst Control Center for the first time officially. It's style seems more modern and it's usability is quite good.

    AMD Catalyst 10.12 Component Versions

    Just days before the actual release, the man in charge for Catalyst software at AMD announced the 10.12 version of AMDs Radeon drivers as being „huge”. And he didn't exxagerate. AMD has refurbished their Catalyst Control Center and re-done not only the looks of it - but it's still in a kind of advanced beta. Consequently, there's only an optional download including this new control panel. And it is huge. Around 110 Megabytes in fact, but they're for 32 and 64 Bit editions of Windows 7 and Vista respectively. Also, there's support for GPU acceleration in the latest version of Divx - but only for HD 6000 series and probably other AMD processors utilizing the UVD3 video processor.

    The GF114 GPU on Geforce GTX 560 Ti is GF104B really

    Seems like Charlie D. was right after all - at least with regard to GF110 being really a GF100B. That's the impression you get when trying to flash a new BIOS onto your brand new Geforce GTX 580 with the BIOS flash tool called nvflash.exe.

    Catalyst 10.11 comes with AMD branding for the first (official) time

    AMD have released the november issue of their Catalyst Driver suite or rather the eleventh iteration this year, named Catalyst 10.11 accordingly. Great change has come with this driver as it is the first official WHQL driver for Radeon cards to bear the AMD signature. As a result of those tremendous changes, you'll see some new logos and artwork when installing the driver - that's perfectly normal, so do not be afraid, you're still keeping the same card you love so dearly.

    Radeon HD 6850, Catalyst 10.10 WHQL, AI Texture Slider "Quality", 16xAF

    Anisotropic texture filtering has been invented in order to improve image quality (not only) in 3D games. The improved image quality, however, has fallen victim not only to so called optimizations but from time to time also to hardware bugs, for example the banding encountered in the HD 5000 series, as was confirmed at the launch of AMDs brand new HD 6800 series of DirectX 11 compatible graphics processors. Today, I'll try and compare a bunch of screenshots from both the Radeon HD 6800 series (with Catalyst 10.10 WHQL) and Nvidias Geforce 400 Series (with Geforce 260.99 WHQL) and highlight some of the differences not only with the highest possible quality settings in the driver, but also the default quality in case of AMDs Radeon HD 6800.
